Avoid Streaks Applying Tanning Lotions
Want a perfect indoor tan? Afraid of using indoor lotions because you might get streaks? Read our guide on applying skin lotions in the correct way to avoid streaking…

Sunless tanning lotions have come a long way since they were first introduced in the early 1990’s. Initially there was great market resistance to such products not least because some of the side effects of incorrectly applying these lotions left the skin looking strange and sometimes even funny. People who didn’t take the time out to correctly read the instructions would commit all sorts of mistakes that often ended up wit the person looking way over tanned, with dark streaks running across their skin or even with bright orange hands due to over exposure of the lotions. These days, however, such unpleasant side effects are easily avoidable due to the fact that the lotions themselves have developed to be safer and there is greater awareness about the correct methods of application of such lotions.
Bright orange hands are a common unsightly side effect of the indoor tanning process. The reason this tends to happen is because your hands come into prolonged exposure with the lotions due to the fact that it’s your hands that are applying the stuff to your entire body. There are two ways to avoid getting orange hands; the first involves wearing plastic gloves while applying the lotion and then finally taking them off at the end when you apply some lotion to the hands as well.
One of the biggest problems people come up against when using indoor lotions is streaks. These are clearly obvious lines that appear on your skin due to the fact that the lotion hasn’t been applied properly. The two keys to avoiding streaks is to apply the lotion swiftly, and in circles. By doing it this way as opposed to simply running your hands straight down your legs, you are ensuring more even distribution of the lotion hence avoiding any dark streaks.
One of the most important pre requisites before applying any sunless tanning lotion is to perform a complete exfoliation of the skin prior to beginning the tanning process. By doing this you are ensuring that your tan stays for as long as possible. It should be remembered that even the best of these lotions are always short lived because the tan can only last as long as it takes for your body to naturally shed its outer layer of skin.
It is worth advising those who are trying an indoor lotion for the first time not to go overboard. While it may be tempting to go for that deep bronze tone straight from the beginning, often this isn’t a good idea. Not only are your chances of messing up the process higher on your first time, but if you are using a really powerful bronzer then the negative results will be all the more visible. Also, it should be remembered that not everybody looks good with a deep bronze tan. Just because someone else looks great with one, it does not mean that you are suited to such a look. It’s the same with fashion, hair and most other things.
