One of the biggest problems people come up against when using indoor lotions is streaks. These are clearly obvious lines that appear on your skin due to the fact that the lotion hasn’t been applied properly. The two keys to avoiding streaks is to apply the lotion swiftly, and in circles. Generally, its recommended to start applying the lotion from the top of your legs downwards, then from your hands upwards to your shoulders and then finally to cover the trunk of your body front and back.
Once you build up your base, you really don’t need to tan as often. So depending on the type of bed you are using, you should only go 2-3 times per week to keep your tan, even less in stronger beds. This is where I see many people go overboard, tanning every day when it is really not necessary. Many people enjoy the relaxation time that tanning provides, but tanning too often can and will speed up your aging process and potentially cause other skin ailments over a long period of time. Just like everything else in life, moderation is key!
Before applying indoor tanning lotion to your skin it’s best to get in the shower and give your whole body a really good scrub. This will remove most of the dead skin cells from the surface of the skin which would have fallen off in the next couple of days anyways. As it is these lotions only provide tans that remain for up to a week at the most so its important to maximize how long you can enjoy the fruits of one application if only by a few days. Exfoliating your skin before tanning could make the difference between a tan that lasts 2 days and one that lasts a week.
It is worth advising those who are trying an indoor lotion for the first time not to go overboard. While it may be tempting to go for that deep bronze tone straight from the beginning, often this isn’t a good idea. Just because someone else looks great with one, it does not mean that you are suited to such a look. It’s the same with fashion, hair and most other things. Start off with a mild lotion, see how you look, then once you’ve become familiar with how the stuff works and are confident that you look good, you can try out more powerful lotions.
